Principal Civil Engineer Mike Lyons and Associate Civil Engineer Michael Schubert are putting their local knowledge into practice in our strong pipeline of current work in Adelaide and surrounding regions.

Mike Lyons joined the Adelaide team in early 2024 with over 35 years’ experience across South Australia and the ACT, including in senior roles on large-scale residential projects.

Spiire’s established history of delivering projects of significant scale and complexity complements his specialist expertise in substantial masterplanned communities.

“I thoroughly enjoy the residential development world. It’s a very broad and complex industry and you deal with quite interesting and diverse aspects of it in each project,” Mike says.

“A very important part for me at this point in time is being able to contribute to the delivery of new residential estates to address the acute housing shortage which we currently have – even though I’m only contributing a relatively small part to the solution of a much bigger issue.”

As a proud Adelaide local since 1965, Mike enjoys working together with the wealth of local connections he has fostered, while also being supported by Spiire’s broad and diverse network of 400 people collaborating across eight integrated disciplines in 10 geographies.

“We have a high calibre of professionals at Spiire and the opportunity to collaborate with them and share workloads across borders is something I really enjoy and appreciate,” he says.

“The different teams bring a great depth of knowledge and experience and that ability to think outside the square. This often results in fresh new ideas being introduced to offer sound and cost-effective solutions that may not have been previously considered.”

Joining the team shortly after the Adelaide office launch, Mike is seizing the opportunity to get in at the ground floor of a newly established business unit. He enjoys contributing to the growth of the business by building capability across an enthusiastic and skilled team.

Full project life cycle

Associate Civil Engineer Michael Schubert joined the team in 2023, with over 16 years of experience including project management and stakeholder consultation across private and government civil projects in South Australia and Canberra under his belt.

Michael was drawn to Spiire’s active connection to the property and infrastructure industry, which matches his own expertise and interests.

“Spiire has a real focus on land development, which I really appreciated. Given the size of the company, I knew there would be an abundance of resources, knowledge and systems in place to help streamline these projects in an efficient manner,” he says.

Through his career in land development, he finds satisfaction in generating innovative and pragmatic solutions to diverse projects and overseeing their full life cycles.

“Every site has its own unique context, whether it’s a steep site, a site with a floodplain, or even planning-related issues that require civil engineering solutions. I enjoy seeing projects come to fruition from concept to detailed design and completion, with the various steps along the way,” he says.

A highlight of Michael’s work is facilitating stakeholder engagement across a range of local active projects, including Air at Strathalbyn. The development, part of the already established town of Strathalbyn, will offer 100 premium lots, helping the local community continue to grow.

“I’ve been really enjoying the opportunity to run with that one and liaise with the various departments in Council that are involved with the project. Providing an outcome that all stakeholders are happy with, and that will sell, is extremely rewarding,” he says.
