With ten offices across Australia, Spiire’s broad geographical presence provides our people with the opportunity develop new skills through secondments.

Two consultants from our Melbourne team, Associate Surveyor Scott Dyson and Senior Construction Engineer Nyasha Ngundu, recently took up opportunities to spend time working from the Canberra office.

This highlighted the benefits to both individual consultants and the wider business of sharing resources to develop each other and work together as one team.

When Scott joined Spiire in 2015 as a survey assistant, it was his first role in the industry. Now an Associate in the Melbourne team, he has honed his technical expertise across spatial applications through structured learning opportunities, including on-the-job training and mentoring.

So, when the opportunity arose to spend three months in the ACT helping integrate the new Canberra Survey team into the broader business, Scott was only too happy to assist.

“The new team is mainly cadastral, so it was a great opportunity for them to upskill and get more involved in the spatial side of things. I’m a bit of a tech nerd so I love all that sort of thing,” Scott says.

“I’d heard the regulations are quite different in the NSW and the ACT, so I knew there would also be some opportunities for me to learn new things there. I thought it would be a cool experience overall.”

Surveying and Spatial Practice Manager Matt Trevaskis says Scott has long been an integral part of the Melbourne Survey team.

“He’s the go-to technical person for hardware and software issues, likes to get into the details, and he’s always first to put his hand up if it’s a remote job,” Matt says.

As well as successfully bringing the new team quickly up to speed with new equipment, helping with deliverables, and trouble-shooting technical or project issues, Scott says he has learned a lot from the experience.

“Learning differences in field methodologies because of different regulations required in NSW and the ACT was a big one,” says Scott.

“I really enjoyed going out onto new projects and trouble-shooting on the go. There was a bit of problem solving in trying to think of how to integrate the new team’s workflows with out technology – almost like trying to knit the two systems together.”

Broadened construction knowledge

An increased workload at Spiire’s longstanding projects at South Jerrabomberra and Jumping Creek provided Senior Construction Engineer Nyasha Ngundu with the opportunity to broaden his exposure to interstate processes and grow his internal network within the Construction Consultancy practice area.

While the local team benefited from his additional skills and resource over the course of the three months, Nyasha has also enjoyed the opportunity to expand his knowledge of the unique role of the superintendent in the ACT.

“Such experience in a different market will help propel Nyasha’s career development to new heights through diverse challenges and invaluable experiences,” says Melbourne Civil Engineering Business Manager Mark Zammataro.

“The Melbourne team will benefit from Nyasha’s broadened knowledge, which will be particularly valuable in informing our onsite WHS and environmental compliance procedures on his return to Melbourne.”
