Taxiway Bravo Extension, Canberra Airport

Spiire was engaged by Canberra Airport Group as the superintendent to manage the construction contract and provide site surveillance services for the delivery of the Taxiway Bravo Extension.
The client’s objective was to construct a new section of taxiway, increasing Canberra Airport’s capacity during peak times.
The scope consisted of multiple trunk service relocations and the construction of a new stormwater, sewer and watermain. The project also involved the relocation of east coast critical aviation communication services. In addition, major bulk earthworks operations were required to excavate and dispose of approximately 100,000 sqm of material.
With non-typical geotechnical features, namely very low CBR values and high clay content soils, the importation of 90,000 sqm of high-quality select material was required for placement under the pavement. Works within the graded runway strip required specialist pavement works and were extensive, with the use of lean mix concrete, fine crushed rock, foamed bitumen gravels and wearing courses.
Given the project was located within an active aerodrome, significant consultation, planning and resource
monitoring were required. Operational restrictions required the construction contractor and consultant
teams to work in the most efficient and cooperative framework possible.
