Spiire’s Civil Engineering team was engaged by Morris Property Group (MPG) to provide both detailed design and construction consultancy services for the Edinburgh Avenue project.
The project involved the extension of Edinburgh Avenue from London Circuit to Vernon Circle. This allows public access to a four stage mixed-use development including commercial, retail and residential dwellings
Our Landscape Architecture team was also engaged to provide detailed design services for the project.
The project site is located in the very centre of Canberra Civic within a highly visible, developed and densely populated area. This presented some unique challenges to the design team.
A large number of services exist in the old inner city centre, and as such, detailed design incorporated relocations, new connections and provisions for further developments adjacent to the site. Early planning and survey of these existing services was critical to ensure the design of new services would avoid relocations of existing services.
The future stage of Light Rail, which is a major project in Canberra, is located within the limits of the site. This meant the design had to accommodate, and make future provisions for, the forthcoming project to avoid costly abortive works upon starting construction.
Edinburgh Avenue is on a steep incline which connects both London Circuit to Vernon Circuit. The design was carefully considered to still be compliant with both pedestrian access and a bus route. Verge paving and garden beds allow high quality landscape design, creating great amenity to the precinct and allowing for safe travel for pedestrians and cyclists.
Spiire also undertook the role of superintendent for the construction of the project. Our team certified the standard of construction on behalf of MPG and the ACT Government.
Throughout the construction there have been multiple challenges such as procurement delays, wet weather, high vehicle and pedestrian volumes. One of the daily challenges was managing traffic and pedestrians around the busy inner urban site safely. This included complete road closures of London Circuit to allow new underground services to be constructed during a busy Easter weekend.
